Speed Up WordPress Website:

If you have created a new website with WordPress and you are not happy with its performance, then this article is for you. I will discuss various factors to speed up WordPress website performance.

Google loves fast websites. Website speed is an essential ranking factor according to Google. A site with high speed and performance is undoubtedly ranking higher than other websites.

If you want to make a good impression in Search Engines, then you must take care of the speed and performance of your website.

So, in this guide of a speed up WordPress website, I am going to give you a full guide which will help you in getting maximum speed for your site.

Why is Performance Necessary?

According to Google, if your web pages are not loading under 4 seconds then 60-70% of users will leave your website, and your Bounce Rate will increase.

It not only about Google but if your website loading time is more than it may irritate visitors and they will never revisit your website.

So to avoid this condition, your website loading time must be fast. If your website is quick and has good quality content then apparently it will keep engaging the users for a long time.

Why use WordPress for your website:

WordPress is one of the best CMS in the market. WordPress powers 25-28% of the web.  The main reason behind it is its flexibility.

WordPress has many themes and plugins which make it different from other content management systems. You don’t have to be a master in a programming language to use WordPress.

So, if you are planning to make a blog for you then definitely go for WordPress. It is easy to setup and very much flexible than others.

Different Ways to Speed Up WordPress Website:

Let me give you a complete guide to optimize your WordPress website. With the help of these steps, your website performance will increase, and the site will rank better.

In this whole process, I will use some plugins as well as some manual steps to speed up a WordPress website. So let’s start the process below:

1. Use Quality Hosting to Speed up WordPress Website:

The first and essential thing is your website hosting. Hosting is very very important if you are serious about blogging. The quality of hosting will determine website performance.

If you are using shared hosting or free hosting, then you are wasting your time here. Free hosting always creates problems, and they are not secure also.

If you are on shared hosting, then it means many other sites are sharing same space on your website. Thus, web server always takes more time to process your queries.

If you want to make the change, then I suggest you buy managed WordPress hosting. Almost every hosting company provides the same.

Managed WordPress hosting is a different platform, and it is only designed only for WordPress. It is specially designed to handle WordPress in every possible way.

Doesn’t matter how much traffic you are getting. It will never let your website down. Also, it will manage many readers at a time with increasing loading time.

In my suggestion, if you want to purchase new hosting or want to migrate old hosting then go for Blogbing. It is one of the best-managed WordPress hostings.

I tried Godaddy Managed Hosting and HostGator Cloud Hosting but my experience is worst with them. Blogbing is best and its cheaper than others.

I have written a full review of Blogbing and trusted me it would boost your website performance. It is also providing free SSL certificate for a lifetime which is issued by Let’s Encrypt.

If you signup for Blogbing then your blog will be hosted in Microsoft Azure which is the best and most advanced Cloud platform in the world.

2. Cache Plugins to Speed Up WordPress Website:

To speed up WordPress website we have different plugins for Caching. Top rated plugins are W3 Total Cache, WP Super Cache, WP Fastest Cache, etc.

It’s your choice that which one you want to install on your website and with which you want to optimize your site.

Now let me clear you some points. If you are using managed WordPress hosting, then you don’t need a cache plugin. Almost every managed hosting has inbuilt cache facility.

In my website, I am not using any cache plugin. But still getting 100% performance. If you are on regular hosting, then cache plugin is necessary. I recommend WP Speed of Light Cache plugin for regular hostings.

If you are Blogbing and using a plugin for cache, then please remove it as soon as possible. It is entirely unnecessary in it.

3. Use Light Theme to Speed Up WordPress Website:

Always use proper and purchased theme on your WordPress website. Before buying it, please read the reviews available on different sites.

I recommend using light themes. A theme with lots of functions will surely make your website bulky and increase its loading time. Keep site as simple as possible.

4. Optimize Images to Speed Up WordPress Website:

Always optimize images to improve page loading time. If your images are correctly optimized for various sizes, then it will grow loading time.

Images can be optimized in two ways. With Plugins and Manually with Tiny PNG website. If you are new to WordPress, then go to plugins method.

Top recommended plugins are WP-Smush, EWWW Optimizer, and Short Pixel. Always use any of these three plugins and keep your images optimized.

In the manual process, you have to use Tiny PNG website. After that upload them to Tiny PNG website and press Compress button. After that download compressed images and use them in WordPress.

5. Limited Plugins to Speed Up WordPress Website:

My site has lots of functionality, but I am using only 11 plugins in it. I have some essential plugins like WP Smush, WP Review Pro, Yoast SEO, Use Any Font, etc.

Always use minimum plugins to avoid lots of scripts. All plugins need resources which make your website heavy. Do not install too many plugins unless you need some.

6. Avoid Too many Widget to Keep Page Light:

Always use fewer widgets in sidebars to reduce loading time. Keep widgets limited so that page load fast. Nobody likes waiting.

7. Compression and Browser Cache to Speed Up WordPress Website:

Always use Gzip Compression to compress the content of your website. Compression will surely boost your site loading time.

Leverage Browser Cache is also an important factor. Paste following code into your .htaccess file:

<IfModule mod_expires.c>
ExpiresActive On
ExpiresByType image/jpg “access 1 year”
ExpiresByType image/jpeg “access 1 year”
ExpiresByType image/gif “access 1 year”
ExpiresByType image/png “access 1 year”
ExpiresByType text/CSS “access 1 month”
ExpiresByType text/html “access 1 month”
ExpiresByType application/pdf “access 1 month”
ExpiresByType text/x-javascript “access 1 month”
ExpiresByType application/x-shockwave-flash “access 1 month”
ExpiresByType image/x-icon “access 1 year”
ExpiresDefault “access 1 month”

8. Minify CSS & Javascript to Speed Up WordPress Website:

If you are using a cache plugin, then you will get these options in that plugin. But if you are not using any cahe plugin then you can use different plugins to minify CSS and JavaScript.

I recommend using Autoptimize WordPress plugin which is very simple and easy to us. Install it, and it will do all the tasks for you.

More methods to Speed Up WordPress Website:

  1. Avoid Jetpack: Jetpack is a useful plugin, but it has lots of functionality. You don’t even need half of them. I was using it before but removed it due to loading time issue.
  2. Too many Pop-Ups: Avoid showing pop-ups again and again it will not only irritate the visitors but also reduce the loading time.
  3. Combining CSS and JS: Use some plugins to perform this.
  4. Overloaded Multimedia: Avoid adding too many images and videos to your blog post.
  5. Multiple Cache Plugins: If you are on regular hosting then use only one cache plugins of your choice.
